MIFP Congratulates Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura on the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics

MIFP congratulates Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura for the Nobel Prize for Physics 2014 for the development of blue light-emitting diodes based on GaN. The homepage text explains that while the revolutionary technological advances were made in Japan, fundamental properties of GaN-based heterostructures were studied in Europe by MIFP members. It highlights the contributions of Bernard Gil to excitons in GaN and of Alexey Kavokin and Bernard Gil to GaN-based microcavities for strong coupling applications. The note also mentions the CLERMONT networks and the later success of room-temperature polariton lasing in semiconductor microcavities. It closes by paying tribute to Bernard Gil and colleagues and by linking a joint publication by MIFP members Tatiana Shubina and Alexey Kavokin with Professor Amano on Mie resonances, infrared emission and bandgap of InN.
